Weddings in the Riviera Maya

If you are planning to get married in Mexico, it is highly recommended that you work with the resort where you plan to stay. Many resorts have wedding coordinators and they can help with the legal requirements.

In Mexico, only civil wedding ceremonies are legal; these are officiated by a Justice of the Peace.

• Applications and/or documents required: Bring along original copies of the following (and be sure these are packed in carry-on luggage, never in checked bags). It is also recommended to bring two copies of all documentation:
  • Valid passport and tourist card
  • Certified copies of birth certificates that have been previously legalized by the Consulate of Mexico with jurisdiction over the country of birth
  • If divorced or widowed, it must be proven that it is has been one year since the official dissolution of last marriage or since the death of previous spouse. This requires certified copies of the divorce decree or a certified death certificate.
• Residency requirements: None
• Blood test: Performed in destination
• Waiting period: Plan to be in the country at least five days before your ceremony to take care of translation of documents
• Other requirements:
  • Two witnesses over the age 18; along with identification for proof of age. If the bride has been divorced within the last 12 months, it is required that she have a negative pregnancy test authenticated by the Mexican Consulate.
  • Hotels may also have their own requirements, such as a minimum number of nights or rooms, minimum room category, etc. Check with the hotel for their specific requirements.

Honeymoons in the Riviera Maya

When you make your reservation, be sure to indicate that you will be celebrating your honeymoon as hotels need advance notice in order to ensure your complimentary amenities are ready when you arrive. You'll also need to provide proof of your wedding date, so be sure to bring along a copy of your marriage certificate.
