Weddings in the Dominican Republic

Getting married in the Dominican Republic is quite easy. The onsite wedding coordinator at your hotel will help you with most of the details.

  • Applications and/or documents required: You need to bring along original copies of the following (and be sure these are packed in carry-on luggage, never in checked bags):
    • Valid passports for the couple and witnesses
    • Original copies of birth certificates for the couple and witnesses
    • If divorced or widowed, bring a divorce decree or death certificate for partner translated into Spanish.
    • Single status affidavit in Spanish for each party, joint affidavits not acceptable. These must be notarized and state whether the bride or groom has ever been married, divorced, or widowed.
  • Residency requirements: 3 business days
  • Blood test: None
  • Waiting period: None
  • Other requirements:
    • U.S. citizens are required to write to the American Consulate in Santo Domingo to request permission to marry.
    • According to Dominican Law a divorced woman has to wait 10 months before remarrying unless she is marrying the same man she divorced or she was divorced under special Dominican Republic law.
    • 2 witnesses over 18 years of age
    • Hotels may also have their own requirements, such as a minimum number of nights or rooms, minimum room category, etc. Check with the hotel for their specific requirements.
  • Having your marriage recognized in the U.S: After the ceremony, you will receive a document that proves the wedding took place. You will then need to request a marriage certificate from the local Justice of the Peace. The document issued by the Justice of the Peace is a valid marriage certificate anywhere in the world.

Honeymoons in the Dominican Republic

When making your reservation, be sure to indicate that you will be celebrating your honeymoon, since hotels need advance notice in order to ensure their complimentary amenities are ready when you arrive. You'll also need to provide proof of your wedding date, so be sure to bring along a copy of your marriage certificate.
