St. Louis, Missouri
St. Louis is commonly known as the "Gateway to the West". With a prime location at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers it's the place where many western settlers said goodbye to the comforts of the East and embarked on an adventure that eventually led to the western expansion of the United States. This time in American history is commemorated by the Gateway Arch, an American landmark as recognizable as any other. Visitors to the Gateway Arch can travel by tram to the top, 630 feet above the ground, for a bird's eye view of the entire St. Louis area. On the ground, you can cruise along the spectacular Mississippi River aboard the Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher, replicas of 19th-century steamboats, and visit the Museum of Westward Expansion. Also, explore the rally point of the Lewis and Clark journey at Lewis & Clark: Imagining the Expedition from St. Louis, an interactive exhibit featuring written accounts, fine art, and rare artifacts from the crucial St. Louis and Camp River Dubois preparation period. Though very popular, there is more to St. Louis than the Gateway Arch Riverfront. The expansive Forest Park, site of the 1904 World's Fair, is now home to the world-famous St. Louis Zoo, Art Museum, and Science Center, and all have admission prices everyone can afford - FREE! Other sights include the Anheuser-Busch Brewery where you can tour the 1885 Clydesdale stable, the historic 1892 Brew House, and one of the world's largest beer breweries where adults 21 years of age and older can finish their tour with free samples. Dining in St. Louis centers around the tourist area of Forest Park, as well as the city's many ethnic neighborhoods such as The Hill, an Italian district boasting many authentic Italian eateries. When seeking nighttime entertainment, a St. Louis blues club is sure to fit the bill. Home to more working blues musicians than anywhere else in the world, live blues bands are everywhere, in addition to jazz, Latin, alternative, and rock styles, just to name a few.
