How do I get around town?
Transfers
Transfers are included with your air and hotel vacation package. There is only one main exit at the Pudong International Airport servicing Shanghai. Passengers will be met after clearing customs at the Shanghai airport. Transfer time is approximately 60 minutes via motorcoach. Travelers can also opt for a private car transfer upgrade; see the Activities + More tab for more information.
Public Transportation
Buses are often very old and uncomfortable, but the Shanghai Metro is available to the citizen and vacationer alike.
Taxi
Taxis are the most convenient way to get around the city. All are metered and can be hailed from the street or called. Many drivers do not speak English, so have your hotel write your destination on a piece of paper.
What kinds of dining are available?
Shanghainese food is one of China's main regional cuisines, but most restaurants in Shanghai serve dishes from different Chinese regions or international cuisine, so finding one that serves true Shanghainese food can be difficult. Typical Shanghai fare includes jiachangn doufu (homestyle tofu), pao fan (a thick rice soup), and su ban dou (cold bean mash with vegetables). Some good restaurant choices include:
- Dragon and Phoenix Room
Serving a variety of traditional Chinese dishes, this restaurant is located in the Peace Hotel and offers remarkable views of the Huangpu River, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, and the Bund.
- Jade on 36
Fine dining with a view of the Bund, Jade on 36 has been acclaimed for its design and innovative cuisine. Be amazed with gourmet combinations, textures, and presentations.
- Lan Kwai Fong at Park 97
One of Shanghai's trendiest restaurants, the Park 97 offers international cuisine in an atmosphere to be seen.
- Laris
Named for esteemed chef David Laris, in his words you'll enjoy "more than just a culinary experience; it will be a high-toned journey for the senses — welcoming and warm, stimulating, and elegant."
- M on the Bund
An Art Deco masterpiece that almost singlehandedly put Shanghai dining on the map. The menu changes frequently but always features fresh local ingredients and several signature dishes.
- Meilongzhen
One of the oldest establishments in town, Meilongzhen has the "best for less" reputation. Traditional Chinese atmosphere accompany Sichuan and Shanghai cooking styles.
- T8
Contemporary and inspired cuisine that attracts celebrities. Imaginative lighting and modernized space complement the experience.
Where should I go shopping?
Most stores are open from 10am - 10pm, as shopping is such an important part of Shanghai life. The main shopping streets are Nanjing Lu and Huaihai Lu and in the Xujiahui area. Antiques are a good deal in Shanghai. To make sure you are getting an authentic antique, either know your stuff and go to the Haobao Building or the Li Brothers. Another state-owned store is the Friendship Store. With several locations around the city, the stores are a good source for Chinese arts and crafts, including jewelry, cloisonne, batik, furniture, fans, vases, carpets, jade, linen and silk clothing, and accessories. Western-style department stores include the Orient Shopping Center, Hongqiao Friendship Shopping Centre, and even a French-owned Printemps. Markets are a great place to get a glimpse of Shanghai life. The Bird and Flower Market sells pets and a whole range of plants, and the Zhongua Xin Lu Market has hawkers who sell everything under the sun.
When are the local events?
Get a copy of Shanghai Talk and That’s Shanghai for up-to-date information on what’s going on in the city. They can be found at most hotels and restaurants that cater to tourists. There is also an English-language newspaper, the Shanghai Star, which is available at most hotels.
The Spring Festival
January, new lunar year. This festival ranks as China’s largest national celebration. Shanghai completely shuts down for nonstop street parties and dragon parades culminating in a dazzling fireworks show. Dates for the festival are based on the lunar calendar.
Lantern Festival
January or February. The streets of Shanghai light up during this festival as party goers wander about holding Chinese lanterns.
Shanghai International Film Festival
June. This is a competitive film festival accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations. Founded in 1993 and ratified by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China.
Grand Prix Race
End of September. One of the stops on the Formula One 17-race grand prix. The 3.39-mile circuit is located on the western outskirts of Shanghai.
Shanghai Tourism Festival
October. Festivities begin with the crackle of fireworks and include float parades, concerts, and special walking tours of Shanghai.
Travel tidbits
Bargaining
If you are a non-Chinese and you start your bargaining at 1/2 the asked price, you will definitely end up paying at least double what you could have gotten it for. Start at no more than 1/6th the asked price. If you speak a fair bit of Chinese, start at 1/10th.
Pre Cirque du Soleil
Visit the Shanghai Acrobatics Troupe for a performance by incredible acrobats — many of whom move on to Cirque du Soleil after their tenure in Shanghai. You’ll see strongmen tossing Chinese vases, inexplicably limber contortionists, aerial gymnastic stunts, knife-throwing, and enough spinning plates to fill a cupboard. Shows start at 7:30pm, seven nights a week.
Time Difference
The Chinese tend to eat earlier than later, so if going out to a restaurant for dinner, get into the habit of not starting later than 7pm.
Morning Tranquility
The parks and the Bund promenade fill up with locals performing traditional tai chi and often Western ballroom dancing. No one seems to mind being watched, and the foreigners sometimes join in, but it is the most quiet and private time of the day.
Walking Tour
Take a walk along the Bund (Zhongshan Road), one of the most well known streets in Asia. It is a tree-lined stroll along the Huangpu River filled with diverse architecture and historical significance.
River Cruise
The best way to glimpse the old-meets-new urban grandeur of Shanghai is an evening cruise along the riverfront. To one side, you'll see the Bund, a well-preserved stretch of colonial-era buildings that survived World War II. On the other side is Pudong, the city's new financial district.
