Savannah, Georgia
Savannah is truly a Southern Belle - beautiful, refined, and welcoming. Her beauty and refinement lies in her 21 historic squares shaded by live oaks dripping with moss and elegant residential architecture awash with colorful gardens and some with an even more colorful history. This incredible beauty has bestowed upon her the title of having a historic district that is the largest National Historic Landmark in the county and saved her from Sherman's destruction during the ending days of the Civil War. Each year Savannah welcomes the world and, with a beautiful climate just about all year-round, anytime is a good time to visit. Be sure to take a walking tour or interior tour of the many grand houses or wander along the riverfront with its historic cotton warehouses now home to charming boutiques, fun-loving bars, and a bouquet of restaurants offering fresh seafood and Low Country cuisine. Away from the riverfront are the beautiful squares, each with a different statue and surrounded by homes dating from the 1800s, each more elegant and ornate than the one before. Continuing your walk, you'll also find the 20-acre Forsythe Park, especially beautiful in the spring, with its blooming azaleas, flowering trees, and large ornate fountain dating back to 1858. Further a field, and a great reason to rent a car, are several palatial plantation-era homes and the oceanfront town of Tybee Island with miles of pristine beaches and only 20 minutes from Savannah's historic district.
