Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore is one of America's great success stories. Redevelopment that began in the late 1970s earned the city the title, in 2005, as one of the top 10 summer destinations in the world by Frommer's, a leading travel guide publisher. The highlight of Baltimore's redevelopment area is the Inner Harbor, a scenic and popular waterfront area with dozens of retail stores, restaurants, and attractions. Best of all, most attractions are within walking distance of each other. There's the USS Constellation, the only surviving Civil War battleship still afloat; the Maritime Museum offering tours of warships, submarines, and lighthouses; and the National Aquarium with stunning exhibits and more than 11,000 aquatic animals. Go a bit further and you'll come to the Civil War Museum, housed in a former train station that was a stop on the Underground Railroad. All this walking and touring will make anyone hungry, so re-charge your sightseeing batteries at the Power Plant, a harborfront entertainment and dining complex. You could also hop on a water taxi and travel a few stops to Fells Point, a National Historic District and one of the nation's oldest maritime communities whose streets are now are lined with antique dealers, quaint shops, pubs, and restaurants. Fells Point is only one of Baltimore's neighborhoods, each with its own unique character and flavor. From Little Italy to Federal Hill, Canton to Mount Vernon, there are as many ways to explore the city, as there are treasures to be found. If heading up to Mount Vernon, make sure to visit the Walters Art Museum, one of America's greatest museums with more than 30,000 works of art and artifacts, dating back to 3500 B.C. Baltimore is also a sports-minded city with the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens making their home here. Babe Ruth once called Baltimore his home, as well; you can visit his birthplace, not far from Oriole Park. Northeast of Oriole Park is Sports Legends at Camden Yards, which houses exhibits related to Babe, Johnny Unitas, and others. Finally, to the north of the city is Pimlico Race Course, home to the Preakness, the middle jewel of the horseracing Triple Crown.
