Buffalo, New York
For the architecture aficionado, Buffalo is a must-see, pilgrimage city. There is Louis Sullivan's Guaranty Building, one of his greatest architectural achievements in office buildings and a forerunner of the style that would be known as "skyscraper." H.H. Richardson's imposing Buffalo Psychiatric Center is on both the National Register of Historic Places and the National Historic Landmark list and is the first major example of a style that became known as "Richardson Romanesque." Buffalo's City Hall is one of the finest examples of Art Deco in the country and will be even more resplendent after its renovation in 2007. Frank Lloyd Wright's paradigm-shifting Larkin Building may be gone, but numerous homes for those associated with the Larkin Soap Company still remain, including the exquisite Prairie Style Darwin Martin house and the transitional Graycliffe, the Martin's summer home. More recently, Eliel and Eero Saarinen designed the Kleinhans Music Hall, home to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and also on the National Register of Historic Places and declared National Historic Landmark. And Frederick Law Olmstead, the greatest landscape architect and parks designer of the 19th century, encased these treasures in the nation's first interconnected system of parkways and tree-lined avenues. By driving these parkways and avenues, you'll also find marvelous neighborhoods. There's Allentown, Buffalo's first historic district with more than 1,300 designations. Arlington Park and Days Park are the perfect places to stroll with winding, charming streets and lovingly restored homes. Elmwood is a fun and funky district with antique shops, bistros, bars, and more, as well as Queen Anne, Italianate, and Victorian homes. Parkside is a turn-of-the-century neighborhood with an amazing collection of Arts and Crafts homes. Last, but not least, (and maybe even best), a portion of Delaware Avenue is commonly referred to as Millionaire's Row due to its numerous Gilded Age mansions. After a day of touring and sightseeing, stop and relax at an endless selection of restaurants, pubs, cafés, and coffee shops. Package Includes:- Choice of accommodations
