Founded on the banks of the Rio Grande as a Spanish colonial outpost in 1706, Albuquerque was built in the traditional Spanish village pattern: a central plaza surrounded by a government building, homes, and a church. This area is still vibrant today and is known as Old Town Albuquerque. Old Town features a a bevy of museums and cultural attractions such as the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History and Albuquerque Biological Park.
